The Deepings School is ‘Outstanding’
Ofsted Report

The school was inspected by Ofsted on 23 and 24 November. Lead inspector, Godfrey Bancroft reported that The Deepings School provides its students with an outstanding quality of education. This result places them in the highest tier of schools nationally.

Headteacher, Chris Beckett, is delighted with the outcome of the inspection and said "This judgement is truly reflective of all the hard work and commitment that has taken place at the school over the last few years. We have made significant progress and this outstanding rating was always our target. I am very pleased for the Deepings community and of course our supportive parents and fantastic students. I would also like to congratulate our staff for their efforts and contribution to this success. As a school we are committed to further improvement and I am confident in our ability to achieve this."

Chair of Governors, Jonathan Theobalds, added "Governors are delighted that Ofsted have independently affirmed the exceptional leadership provided by Chris Beckett and the whole school leadership team in continuing to improve the school and standards. We are proud that The Deepings School has been judged to provide an outstanding educational experience for all our pupils, which enables them to fulfil their full potential. Opening of the MUGA's
Opening of the MUGA's at The Deepings School (Click to Enlarge)

Over the last few years the Deepings School has secured funding for several big projects to update and improve sporting facilities. A sum of £70,000 was invested two years ago to create a more aesthetically pleasing gym and dance space. This space is fantastic and offers an attractive working environment for students and also external groups.

More recently funding was sought to improve the sporting resources and social space, located at the back of the school. Over £150,000 has been invested to develop 4 Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA's). These courts can allow a number of sports to be played on them including, basketball, netball, football and tennis. The spaces are purpose built and designed to stand the test of time.

The courts offer a valuable resource for teaching and enable a variety of sports to be taught at the same time. They are also great for students during breaks and lunchtimes providing a brilliant space for recreational and organised sport.

The facility is to be used over coming months as part of the growing partnership the school has forged with Peterborough United Football Club. The club's Youth system will be using the facilities as part of a programme that is in place for their Under 15 squad and it is hoped that this will increase over the coming years. It is also nice to have two ex students who are part of the Under 18 Youth Team, Scott Ginty and Callum Read return to the school for the opening.

It is also hoped that the wider local community will have more opportunities to benefit from this facility. The courts have been available for the Leisure Centre to use and we anticipate as the summer approaches there will be a great number of people enjoying the space in the evenings.

Head of the Performance Faculty Jo Robertson said "We are very fortunate to have a large number of people in the school who are passionate about sport, and therefore make good use of these opportunities to ensure we have high quality sporting facilities on offer to our pupils and the community. This has been strengthened by the growing relationship the school has with POSH. I know we are extremely grateful for their support today."

Head Teacher Chris Beckett said "These facilities are a fantastic addition to the school and will be of real benefit to both our students and community. I am very grateful to Darren for giving his time to formally open the courts and to see first hand what a good school we are. Our links with POSH are already strong and I look forward to developing a sustainable partnership in the future."

Celebratory Logo Change

For the 50th Anniversary celebrations we have redesigned our logo just for one year only. We have returned to the original logo from 1958.

The badge combines the three cockle shells of St James and the symbol of the departure of St Guthlac by boat from Market Deeping to Crowland.

An Enterprising Idea
Money raised for Anna's Hope Charity (Click to Enlarge)

As a Business and Enterprise college The Deepings School is keen to encourage pupils to be enterprising.

Each tutor group in Y7 has been given the princely sum of £50 with a view to them raising funds for charity by engaging in enterprise activities. Each tutor group will try to turn that initial capital of £50 into a larger sum by the end of the year.

Phil Smith, Specialist Status Director said:

"This means that we expect them to use skills such as team work, decision making, problem solving and risk taking to solve problems that they are faced with.
The pupils would be expected to do something enterprising with their money (they could use it to buy buckets and sponges to wash cars for example) and the House that raised the most money for their designated charity would win a House prize – which could be another £50 for the winning house charity!
"

The recently elected Y7 council representatives will be motivating their classmates to come up with suggestions and they will also be guided and supported by the Y11 House and Charity Captains.
