It is vital that everyone who places personal information about themselves, or others, on the Internet is aware of the issues involved. Recent news items have highlighted the dangers that social network sites, in particular, can pose.

"Ofcom's survey of 5,000 adults and 3,000 children found 49% of those aged between 8 and 17 have a profile. Forty-one per cent of children had set their profile so that it was visible to anyone, according to the report."
