Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)

Good quality careers education will raise the aspirations of all young people and help our students to become effective career planners and managers of their own progression through learning and work. It will increase motivation by linking activities in school with preparation for life post 16 and post 18. In providing unbiased IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) our aim is to raise pupil achievement and increase confidence whilst helping to ensure the equality of opportunity for all.

At The Deepings School we provide a comprehensive CEIAG programme for every year group and this includes aspects of work related learning, enterprise education and financial capability.

Most people spend many years of their life in a working environment and it is therefore important to equip our students with the necessary skills for them to make decisions about their future, to know how and where to access information and to link subject areas and qualifications with possible careers.

Careers education in the UK is a statutory requirement based around the following framework

Self Development – To help young people understand themselves and the influences on them, build a track record of their experiences and achievements and develop their capabilities.

Careers Exploration – To help young people identify, investigate and explore opportunities in learning and work.

Career Management – To help young people make and adjust plans to manage change and transition.

Careers and Guidance

We work closely with Connexions, who are now part of the Children's Services Department at Lincolnshire County Council. They are in school each week to provide one-to-one guidance interviews for our KS4/KS5 pupils, informal drop-in sessions and to offer group discussion forums to those students seeking apprenticeships or entry into the labour market. Working with our pastoral team, Connexions also provide advice about non-career issues for example, homelessness, teenage pregnancy and financial assistance. The school shares student data with this organisation so that impartial and individual advice can be offered. Parents/carers need to advise the school in writing if they do not wish this data to be forwarded.

All of our Y10 students undertake a two-week period of work experience in May. This is an invaluable opportunity, providing the chance to develop their key skills and sample the world of work.

CEIAG is on-going throughout the academic year and we take every opportunity to provide unbiased information advice and guidance to all members of our school community. Our Careers Library has been awarded a certificate of excellence and as a school we have been accredited with the prestigious Careers Mark award for the past six consecutive years.
