Extended Schools

"The hub for community institutions" DFES 2004

"An Extended School is one that offers a range of services and activities(often beyond the school day) which meets the needs of pupils, their families and the community" OFSTED may 2005

By 2010 all schools should offer a wide ranging and stimulating range of activities between 8am and 6 pm.

The idea behind Extended Schools came originally from America and, following a 1998 report here showed significantly lower attainment in pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, Scotland opened the first Community School in 1999.

This was then followed by the Education Act 2002 which set up 25 pathfinder projects which were encouraged to:

  1. Be open to pupils, families and the community during and beyond the school day
  2. Hold activities aimed at vulnerable pupils
  3. Promote social cohesion
  4. Provide services to the community
  5. Raise educational standards

This developed into the Every Child Matters framework in 2004 and are now the basis of the core offer by which Extended provision is judged:

  1. Varied menu of activities
  2. Parenting support
  3. Community access to facilities
  4. Swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services

Within Our Community

Within our school, Extended provision is managed by Mrs Pearson and, in addition to looking at the opportunities that we offer here, she also works closely with our cluster of primary schools to develop the provision further.

Our cluster of schools (DSJ, Linchfield, MD, WH, Baston, Langtoft and the Comprehensive) is recognised as being at the forefront in the County for the work it does to ensure this provision is met.
Sue Bell was appointed as our co-ordinator last year and we are now entering a very exciting period of development.

There is a great deal of Extended School provision around, and to develop it further we are constantly working with pupils and the community to add further opportunities.

Finally...

If, as a member of the community you have and requests or ideas please contact Mrs Pearson at the School.
