Business Studies

SUBJECT VISION

Business and Economics is at the heart of any successful economy.  It is business activity that enables societies’ needs and wants to be satisfied.  We hope to inspire our students to recognise the importance of business activity to society and the contribution that entrepreneurs make to the quality of life that we are able to enjoy.

We want our students to recognise that within themselves they have the necessary skills to work in a vibrant and ever changing business environment and succeed.  What’s more, we hope that some will aspire to set up and run successful business ventures themselves.  To do this we hope to help develop within them the vital skills that they will need, skills such as determination, communication, independence and creativity.

We want our learners to excel and to feel positive about themselves and their achievements.  We believe that the skills highlighted above as well as perseverance, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude will enable our students to achieve well in this subject, both at GCSE and at A level.  At the same time we wish to equip them with the skills and the opportunity to choose a career that they will enjoy and which they aspire to do.

STUDENTS THAT HAVE GONE ON TO STUDY AT UNIVERSITY

Both Business and Economics are popular university choices, with a high proportion of our students going on to study these subjects, or a related specialism such as Marketing or Accounting.

SUBJECT SUCCESS STORIES

The last academic year was a particularly positive one for many of our students.  In A level Economics 83% of them achieved an A-C grade.  Their own motivation and positive, hard-working attitude was a credit to them.  Many of them have now gone on to study a business or economics related degree at university.

Our Year 11 BTEC group of students schieved very well, and many of them achieved a Distinction grade for their work.

Our GCSE results at the top end were good and in line with the target of A*-C.  Several students achieved a grade which was two grades higher than their target grade.

EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SUBJECT

We have a range of extra curricular opportunities in Business and these include:

Level 3 BTEC coursework club running throughout the academic year.

GCSE targeted revision sessions run throughout the Spring term.  A specific focus this year will be on C/D borderline students.

A Level refresher sessions during the run up to the A Level exams in May and June.
