GEOGRAPHY VISION

Geography students hold the key to the world’s problems

Geography inspires students to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.

We aim to stimulate in our students an interest in and a sense of wonder about the world around them. We also aim to equip our students to become independent learners with the ability to question, investigate and to think critically about issues affecting a dynamically changing world both now and in the future. We are passionate about providing our students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom be it during lesson time, on day trips or on residential trips at GCSE and A-Level and we are proud of the positive relationships built between staff and students. Geography students succeed at every level at The Deepings School and Geography provides a comprehensive basis from which students can follow any career path they wish to pursue. Geography graduates are among the most employable due to our understanding of the interdependence between the physical and human world and our ability to understand the socio-economic and political complexities associated.

Geography is not only up-to-date and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. So many of the world’s current problems boil down to geography, and need the geographers of the future to help us understand them

EXAMINATION COURSES OFFERED

GCSE

At Key Stage 4, Geography is a popular option for students where they achieve very good GCSE results.  The Deepings School Geography Department follow the Edexcel B Specification, which is broken down into four separate units.  Students study Units 1 and 2 to build their core knowledge and understanding, this is developed in Units 3 and 4.

Unit 1

Dynamic Planet

(Physical Geography)

In this unit you will study:

  • Restless Earth
  • Changing Climate
  • Battle for the Biosphere 
  • Water World
  • River Processes and Pressures
  • Extreme Environments

Unit 2

People and the Planet

(Human Geography)

The main topics in this unit are:

  • Population Dynamics
  • Consuming Resources
  • Globalisation
  • Development Dilemmas
  • Changing settlements in the UK
  • Challenges of a Rural World

Unit 3

Making Geographical Decisions

For Unit 3, students examine geographical issues at a range of scales, consider solutions and justify their choices.  The aim is that students will develop the skills to analyse a geographical problem and to consider, select and justify proposed solutions, using their learning from Units 1 and 2.

Unit 4

Investigating Geography

(Controlled Assessment)

Unit 4 requires students to complete a fieldwork investigation and report based around a contemporary geographical theme.  The Deepings Geography Department usually choose a fieldwork investigation linked to how city environments are aiming to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

 


A LEVEL

To provide consistency from GCSE study, the Deepings Geography Department follow the Edexcel A-Level Specification for sixth form geographers.  The specification is designed to allow our students the flexibility to build programmes that suit their own particular interests and needs using a range of approaches.  Those geographers with interests in distinct physical, human and environmental approaches will be able specialise, as will those who want a more holistic approach.  

AS-Level

Year 12

Unit 1

Global Challenges

In this unit, students study the meaning, causes, impacts and management of global challenges.  How we can influence global challenges through our own lives. There are two compulsory topics that form this unit:

  • Topic 1: World at Risk

  • Topic 2: Going Global

Unit 2

Geographical Investigations

Here, students take a closer look at how physical and human issues influence lives and can be managed. Students will study the following two topics:

  • Topic 1: Crowded Coasts reveals how increasing development is testing our ability to manage these valued environments.

  • Topic 2: Rebranding Places focuses on how we need to re-image and regenerate rural and urban places, using appropriate strategies.

Unit 3

 

Contested Planet

Consumption patterns highlight stark inequalities between regions, countries and groups of people.  Many resources are finite, and rising consumption means that difficult decisions over the use of resources will have to be taken more frequently. For Unit 3, there are six compulsory topics for students to look into:

  • Topic 1: Energy Security

  • Topic 2: Water Conflicts

  • Topic 3: Biodiversity Under Threat

  • Topic 4: Superpower Geographies

  • Topic 5: Bridging the Development Gap

  • Topic 6: The Technological Fix?

Unit 4

Geographical Research

Students in this Unit focus on the study of ‘Life on the Margins – the Food Supply Problem’.  This Unit provides a perfect opportunity to prepare our A-Level geographers for in-depth study of an extremely contemporary issue.  This allows a stepping stone for higher education.

 


SUBJECT SUCCESS STORIES

We are an extremely successful department that strives to spread the importance of Geography into everyone that comes into contact with us.  The Geography teachers are research focused and incredibly dedicated to the discipline.  Mrs Chapman has lately been working on a project that has been looking at ‘Motivation of students’ between the UK and Brunei.  Mr Smith has recently written a paper that has been published in the International Journal of Climatology, entitled ‘Winter precipitation variability and its affect on river discharge over the East Anglian region of Great Britain’.  All the team regularly attend conferences held by the Geographical Association in order to enhance their subject knowledge and teaching practice.  Our students are also incredibly committed.  Every year, many of our keen geographers enter an essay competition run by ‘Discover the World’; successful entries are given prizes and the winners are entered into a draw with the chance of winning a place on an overseas fieldtrip.  We have an excellent SCoRE team that tirelessly promote the need to become a sustainable school, as well as our extremely popular Geography Club that is regularly attended by over 30 students.  We have a high intake of students into the GCSE course (usually over 100), many of which continue studying with us for A-Level.  Our wide range of fieldtrips are all well attended and get great feedback from the communities we visit.


EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SUBJECT

  • Worldwise Geography Club

Calling all KS3 students!  Come along to the Geography Hub (Room: P6) every Thursday after school for a range of exciting and inspiring Geography activities; everything from erupting your own hand-made volcanoes to tasting food from around the world!

  • Geography Challenges

Every term the Geography Department set a range of challenges for Key Stage 3 students to complete at home with their parents/ carers.  These are very popular and link with the curriculum content that the students study at the time.  There are always lots of prizes up for grabs!

  • SCoRE

In school we have a number of students who act as “Carbon Ambassadors” for Lincolnshire County Council. Collectively they are responsible for encouraging all those who use the school building to act more sustainability. To date they have launched campaigns aimed at changing attitudes towards energy consumption which has led to a reduction in the amount of electricity and gas we use on a daily basis. The next project is to build a greenhouse using recycled bottles in order to grow vegetables to sell to the staff.

  • Geography Hub (Room: P6)

The Deepings Geography Department houses its very own ‘Geography Hub’.  This is a base mainly allocated to all A-Level geographers, but can be used by our KS3 and KS4 students also.  The Geography Hub contains a range of resources from subject specific journals, books and maps to computers with GIS software.  The Hub provides an invaluable resource to any students that want to pursue any questions they have about the world.

  • Stamford Arts Centre visits

The Deepings Geography Department makes full use of the range of lectures held by The Royal Geographical Society at the Stamford Arts Centre.  Many of our students have benefitted from past talks such as ‘Food for Thought’ by the BBC’s George Alagiah; ’Biodiversity’ by George McGavin; ‘Living Africa’ by Steve Bloom, ‘London-2-London via the world’ by Sarah Outen; and ‘The Everest Story’ by Stephen Venables.

  • Outside Speakers

A focus for extra-curricular provision in the Geography Department is to provide our students with a program of specialists coming in to talk to our students on a range of contemporary topics.  Local police officer, David Liddle delivered an excellent talk on ‘Crime and the Environment’ to our year 9 geographers, which linked to their topic on Sustainable Communities.  We have also had representatives from Action Aid speak to our year 8 students about poverty in India, which links to their Incredible India topic.  Furthermore, our year 8’s have had a ‘hands on’ experience with certain rainforest animals coming in to visit; this linked to their study on ‘Endangered Planet’.


FIELDTRIPS

The Deepings School Geography team have a passion for fieldwork and strongly believe in providing as many opportunities for study outside of the classroom for our young geographers, as possible.  Fieldwork offers a wonderful way of seeing the world, and a chance for personal development; it is for this reason why it is fully integrated into key sections of our curriculum ranging from Year 7 right up to Year 13.
