At The Deepings School we aim to make Art a subject that motivates and excites pupils of all ages and abilities.
We aim to encourage and inspire young people to explore their creativity and ideas. We are striving to be an ever-developing department and have a passion for presenting the students with a wealth of opportunities to learn and develop new skills and techniques to allow them to execute their ideas in both 2D and 3D art forms. We aim to give learners the tools to enable them to become more independent with their learning, and aid them in achieving their true potential.
Pupils will learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. They will develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers, expressing reasoned judgements that can inform their own work. We strongly believe that developing students’ literacy skills is integral to their art education, through both classroom and out of school learning opportunities.
At KS3 pupils learn the basics of Colour Theory, and develop their observational drawing skills.
They use a number of different media to explore the visual elements to come up with their own compositions informed by a diverse range of 2D and 3D artists, designers and craftspeople. At KS4 students are able to take a little more responsibility for their learning and develop their skills using a wider range of media and techniques. They are offered the opportunity to go on trips to museums and galleries in order to inform the contextual elements of their course and learn more about art, design and craftsmanship.

EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SUBJECT:
This year we have introduced the role of Art Ambassadors.
We have students from each college and year group (KS3, 4 and 5) taking more involvement in the subject with opportunities to offer their feedback and ideas on how the subject is taught as well as coming up with ideas for competitions, events and creating art work around school and for the new colleges.
We offer Art clubs for all key stages as an extra opportunity for them to develop their skills, finish work or try new things. KS3 art clubs take place at lunchtimes, KS4 have an after school club every Thursday 3.15-5.00pm.
We encourage all of our students to participate in some form of activity throughout the year and aim to cater for all needs.
