Able Gifted and Talented

WHAT DOES "ABLE, GIFTED AND TALENTED" (AGT) MEAN?

There are gifted and talented learners in every year group in every school. The government defines gifted and talented pupils as, "those children who are achieving, or who have the potential to achieve, at a level substantially beyond the rest of their peer group."

At the Deepings, we use the term "Gifted" to describe pupils who have the ability to excel in individual academic subjects such as Maths, English or History. "Talented" describes those who have the ability to excel in practical and creative skills such as sport, music and art. We have our Youth Academies for both of these areas.

WHAT IS AN ABLE, GIFTED AND TALENTED (AGT) REGISTER?

The register lists the children who have been identified by the school as gifted, able and/ or talented in each year group. It also indicates the areas in which they are gifted and/or talented and the process by which they were identified. "IEPs" (Individual Educations Plans) will be developed to help staff to target the individual learning needs of these children. Generally, the register should identify the top 10% of the population of each school. Schools are not required to keep a register of their gifted and talented pupils but national guidance suggests that it is good practice for them to do so and at the Deepings, we like good practice!

HOW DO SCHOOLS DECIDE WHO IS ON THE ABLE, GIFTED AND TALENTED REGISTER?

It is up to individual schools to decide how best to identify their gifted and talented pupils. However, national guidance suggests that schools are likely to obtain the best results by drawing on a wide range of information sources, including both qualitative and quantitative information.

The "Talented" register works by a different mechanism but for the Deepings academic Junior Academy, we use a formula which takes into account pupils' Key Stage 2 SAT results in year 6, their CAT scores which we undertake when they join us, and of course their current assessments in every subject. As they move through the school, their teachers' assessments gain more weight in this judgment.

WHY HAS ANY INDIVIDUAL STUDENT BEEN INCLUDED ON THE GIFTED AND ABLE REGISTER?

Students may be included on the register because the school considers they have ability, or potential, in one or more areas within the school curriculum. The Deepings Gifted & Able Register gives us three broad cohorts of G & A pupils:

The "able" At the Deepings we stream our pupils as we believe this gives them access to the most appropriate and targeted teaching. If we identify a child as "able" this would put them into our top stream, our top 40% of children.
The "gifted" These pupils are identified as gifted in specific subjects. Subject Leaders use a combination of SAT assessments (where appropriate,) assessments and teacher recommendations to make this selection. Consequently this may not be the same group of children for Maths as it is for French.
The "most able" These are the real high flyers, our "Junior Academy" of Rising Stars which constitutes only the 20 or so children in each year group who are identified (by the process outlined above) as our very highest performing students across a range of disciplines.

 

Parents will be notified by letter should their child be identified as one of our "most able" and consequently be selected for the "Rising Stars" Junior Academy.

FOR HOW LONG WILL A STUDENT REMAIN ON THE REGISTER?

Most schools update their gifted and talented registers on an annual basis and pupils are usually placed on the register for a specific period of time, for example a school year. Although many pupils who are identified will continue to make progress as expected, levels of ability are not fixed and may develop significantly over time. The stage at which high potential is demonstrated varies from one child to another. Inclusion on the gifted and able register is a flexible process which reflects the current needs and relative abilities of individual pupils. Pupils may move on and off the register as their circumstances change but should we be considering that your child’s needs may no longer be best served by the Junior Academy, we will discuss it with them and you at least a term before their proposed removal. They may well of course remain on individual subjects' "gifted" programmes.
